Truancy Petition

A truancy petition is a legal document that schools or school districts file in court accusing a student of violating state compulsory school attendance laws. State and local practice determine what type of court hears truancy cases. The length of time between when a school district files a truancy petition and when the child is summoned to court varies from days to months depending on the court and judicial district. The sooner the hearing can take place the better.
